Giovanni Verga was born in Palermo, Italy, and holds a Master’s degree in Art History and Musicology from the University of Palermo. He has been based in Berlin since 2011, where he studied electroacoustic music at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler and completed a Master’s degree under the guidance of Wolfgang Heiniger. His artistic practice develops across electroacoustic and acousmatic music, sound art, theatre, performance, and site-specific installation.
His work explores sound as a spatial, performative, and perceptual medium, often engaging with architecture, urban environments, memory, and the relationship between acoustic and electronic sources.
His compositions, performances, and installations have been presented internationally at festivals and venues including Kontakte – Biennale für Elektroakustische Musik und Klangkunst at Akademie der Künste Berlin, Main-Off in Palermo, MehrLicht! in Berlin, Decibels in Latvia, the 777 Festival in Berlin, Germinale Art Festival and other international contexts.
Recent projects include C.O.M. – City Open Museum / Urban Crossing, a PNRR-funded urban regeneration project in Frosinone, for which he served as co-artistic director and created sound installations; the music for Bodies under Water at Schauspielhaus Hamburg; a sound performance at the Italian Pavilion of Expo 2025 Osaka; and a visiting professorship in Sound Design and Sound Space Design at Qufu Normal University in Rizhao (China) and at Wuhan University of Science and Technology in Wuhan (China).
His works also include the site-specific installation dies ist die geschichte, presented in Eberswalde within Industriekultur in Eberswalde and supported by Kulturland Brandenburg, durch | glas, created with choreographer Nagao Akemi and presented at BHROX Bauhaus Reuse in Berlin, and Tubolaria for soprano saxophone and electroacoustic instrument quartet.
His music and sound design have been produced for theatre and performance contexts including Schauspiel Stuttgart, Schauspielhaus Hamburg, and other institutions and independent productions. He has also published writings on sound practices, sound installations, recording, and the vinyl medium, including contributions to Urban Crossing/Attraversamenti Urbani. In addition to his artistic practice, he teaches Sound Design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Frosinone and at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan.
